2021 WNBA MVP rejoins Liberty after historic postseason
NEW YORK – The New York Liberty has re-signed center, Jonquel Jones, in open free agency.
“We are overjoyed to welcome back JJ,” said Liberty General Manager Jonathan Kolb. “In just one season, she became an indelible part of the Liberty’s core identity, on and off-the-court, and keeping her in seafoam was our first priority in open free agency as we continue our championship pursuit in 2024.”
Jonquel Jones (30), a 6-6 center and native of Freeport, Bahamas, rejoins the Liberty after leading New York to its first-ever WNBA Finals appearance since 2002. Voted the 2023 Commissioner’s Cup MVP, Jones posted averages of 11.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 blocks per game on 52.7% from the field, 35.2% from three, and 86.3% at the free throw line across 40 contests in her debut season in seafoam. Additionally, Jonquel set the WNBA all-time single postseason record for most double-doubles (8) during the Liberty’s 2023 playoff run.
